The Agria Mixed Choir from Eger
Conductor: Viktória Király
The Agria Choir, from the charming baroque Hungarian town of Eger, has a long history. The choir was founded in 1882 with the German name of "Erlauer Liederkreis." Today it follows long traditions and regards itself as the successor to the "Liederkreis." The choir's 30 members include students, teachers, pensioners, public servants, lawyers, etc. Our aim is to bring over the joy of singing and to contribute to the driverse musical life of our town. For this reason we select different pieces to reflect all epochs in European choral music. Our repertoire ranges from Gregorian chants to the present-day composers (Palestrina, Bach, Handel, Bartok, Kodaly, etc.)
We have an enthusiastic following at home in Eger and the audience always looks forward to our performances, especially during Advent. We have also given fine concerts beyond the borders of our native Hungary, for example in Finland, Yugoslavia, Poland, England, Italy, Germany and France. We attach particular importance to friendly relations with our hosts (in Pori, York, Venice and Siegen). In the year 1987 we received the "Festival Choir prize for the third time in the national choir competition. In 1997 our choir won a gold medal.
In our concerts in Frankfurt 2005 we will be performing works by Hungarian composers (choral items, arrangements of folk songs, works for piano and solo pieces). We hope that our concerts demonstrate the power of the "vox humana."
